Our History
History of Metropolitan House
Metropolitan House has witnessed remarkable transformations over the years. This storied structure, originally under the stewardship of J W Ellis, has played an integral role in the evolution of the Gateshead and Newcastle community. The roots of our building's history date back to its use as an office for J W Ellis, an engineering firm deeply involved in the coal mining industry. During those years, this space served as a hub of innovation and industry expertise, contributing to the growth and progress of the mining sector.
In 1974, the building underwent yet another transformation when it became the home of Metro Radio. For over three decades, it resonated with the voices of radio hosts and the energy of radio waves. Metro Radio became a cultural cornerstone, connecting people through music, news, and entertainment. In 2007, Metro Radio left its radio waves behind, marking the end of an era. However, the story of our building didn't stop there. In 2008, under the ownership of Lynn Gate, it was reborn as a dynamic business centre. This transformation opened new doors for professionals and entrepreneurs seeking office accommodation and virtual office solutions, providing them with a conducive environment for success.
Fast forward to 2017, when the building took another significant step in its journey. Its current owner embarked on a journey to rejuvenate its essence. Extensive refurbishments followed, aligning Metropolitan House with modern standards of office space and office accommodation, supporting the evolving demands of hybrid working.
